Christmas seems to be on my mind as I was talking to a friend the other day about singleness...and that's when I realized that being a single sister in the in AC church is like living in a world where every day is Christmas Eve. Let me explain...
As each year passes by, I'm reminded of how much I love Christmas. But even more than Christmas day itself, is the anticipation for Christmas. It's the entire holiday season that makes Christmas day so special. As we decorate and wrap gifts, these treasures are carefully placed under the tree. However, it doesn't matter how excited I am to give my gifts, there's a small part of me that can't help but to peek and see if there's a package under the tree for me.
You see, from the moment your nose emerges from the baptisimal waters...it doesn't matter if you're 15 or 50...you join those who live in Christmas Eve. Each day, you may be given your call to welcome you to the world of those who pass to Christmas Day and actually see if there's a "package" for you under the marriage tree and as you open this gift, you determine if you want to keep it or make an exchange...or just make a return for a full refund. There are different levels of contentment with those who are waiting for the package, and some who have decided that life in the anticipation state is much more exciting than opening a package and prefer to live in the holiday season forever.
For many, as delightful as Christmas Eve may be with all the songs telling of how wonderful Christmas is or how awful it is to get a gift you don't want...living just on the brink of delight can be pure misery. They hope that the gift will make the season complete and the longer they wait, the more precious they hope their gift to be. They watch those younger than them come and snatch up gifts, and this can be about enough to ruin the entire spirit of giving gifts and the joy of the season. We look to the gifts to define us and our worth and without one, we feel as though we've been cheated.
Just like Christmas, the gifts and the anticipation of the 'giving' and 'getting' can make us lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas...the true meaning of what it means to be a Christian lady. To serve Christ and celebrate the gift He has given...the best gift that is not wrapped, kept, or delayed. The instant gift of salvation and the truest of love stories. Thank you Jesus, for your gift and let me not forget the true meaning of what it means to be a Christian.
